Taking that first step into untouched wilderness brings home your own vulnerability as you are dwarfed in the immense environment. Ahead lies endless plains, yet there is a huge abundance of life here and a bustling world of nature waiting to be discovered. The air is almost magical and the calling of nature seems to awaken the land to a chorus of welcome.
Before you now looms the icebergs as they float silently in the ocean. Lazily drifting, they make their way around the coastline, as if on a voyage of discovery to the unknown. You pause for a moment in awe. Is this real, are you really here at the end of the world.
Suddenly you hear the tinkling of ice as it breaks into the sea, you hear the cracks and then the explosion as a giant iceberg breaks free from the stranglehold of the land. It crashes into the sea before surfacing and towering above you. This is nature in gigantic form. In the silver half light you see the water part and the giant back of a whale as it breaks the surface.
The heart races, you stand and gaze at this giant of the deep as it suddenly comes into full view. You pause and reflect on these moments. You realise that you have accomplished a lifelong dream. In this moment you are one of the lucky ones to have been able to witness for yourself such beauty and to be able to unwind in one of the last wildernesses on earth.
As you reflect on your journey you become aware of this place and all its enormity. There is a realisation that this is a place going through a change and that what you are experiencing may in the future be gone through global warming. It makes this experience even more precious and you vow to return to pay your own homage to this place and the environment that has given you so much reward.
