The Uists are famed for their natural environment and wide variety of wildlife experiences but none is as dramatic as the rutt of the stags in late September to mid October. For the photographer this truly is an intimate moment with wildlife.
Our unique adventure takes you into the remote interior landscape of the North and South Uist to where few people ever tread. This is the where natures great battles take place, often under the shroud of darkness and throughout the night. Daybreak still finds the stags roaring at would be pretenders in defiance and posturing on the side of high hills, sniffing the air, listening and strutting back and forth , restless in anticipation of an attack from another stag.
As you creep in with our guide, you feel the heart thumping in your ear. You hear the deep roars and growls coming from the dark hillside before you. Your eyes can't quite make out the stags but you feel their presence.
Ahead of you he stands, the long dark mane, the huge antlers and his size. bigger than you thought but so impressive. How close you get depends on how you follow advice and can crawl . If your good you can get to within twenty feet. That is the challenge of nature for the shots of sa lifetime.
